The Great ''Quota'' System -- Part 2

As one article was not enough to criticize it enough so we had to come up with one more.


India got independence in 1947 and the constitution was formed by 26th November 1949. No, we haven’t forgotten what I am writing about. Our  point is that when the constitution was adopted, the quota for SC\ST\OBC was adopted for a period of five years. After which it was to be reviewed. However, the term conveniently kept being stretched till now; which is 63 years. With all due respect to our  backward classes’ friends, when you were expected to grow enough to handle your own expenses in 5 years, you haven’t been able to do the same in 63 years?

Also, another loop hole in this system is that if your grandparents belonged from backward class, you will get the certificate! Not considering the fact that you very well could have, and may have grown in the following years. Many people we know, owning blackberries and other high-tech cell phones, big cars, et al have authentic “backward classes’’ certificate.

The cut offs for the “backward classes” are ridiculously low. Even in government jobs, their reservation is sky high! In this process, they are not actually encouraging them to develop. On the contrary, it’s a great discouragement knowing that you can perform any which ways you want to and your life will be settled, because of the reservations.

Another fallacy in the system is this- will you be willing to trust, with your life, a doctor who got his/her degree only by getting in with reservations everywhere? And trust a lawyer or any professional not as competent or encouraged as the ones who have actually worked hard to get where they are.

To those who have managed to save their behinds only by getting in through reservation, if this system didn’t exist in the first place, the other reservations wouldn’t be there, the cut offs, would, automatically drop, your chances of admission would have been higher.

The solution is, either reduce the exorbitantly high reservations, or remove them altogether. As clearly, they aren’t benefiting anyone; including the ones who receive this “benefit” of the reservations. Although the “quota” system might have been introduced with good intentions, today, it is nothing but a curse on the Indian society.
