Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola

In darkness, we united. In darkness everybody was one. Every eye was on the screen, all the lips were apart, mesmerized. A single thought was conveyed, a single thought was spread. And when we came out, a single question, by everyone, was asked-

Da Fuq did we just watch!?

Now before giving the review of the movie let me confess that I personally couldn't have enjoyed the movie more. I loved it. However, if your sense of humor is not as demented as mine is, and if you are not drunk while watching it, you are probably going to hate the film. A normal person’s reaction of watching a film would be something like this-

*Film Begins*

A limousine running into a Theka. Hmmm.. interesting, I wonder when Anushka Sharma will finally come.

Ah there she is. Wait, what is a bunch of South African dancers in middle of a Haryanvi village.

Is that a scene of Pankaj Kapoor lighting a cigar from a plane on fire while he is inside it?

Why is there a pink buffalo on Pankaj Kapoor’s bed? Wait… did it just smile!?

Look! Flying Gobar.

Okay, I am lost.

The story is that of Maoists. How the lands of simple villagers were forcefully taken over by politicians and industrialists, only with the usual Vishal Bharadwaj non-sense. Mandola (Pankaj Kapoor) is a feudal landlord who is involved in a plot with a minister Chaudhari Devi (Shabana Azmi) to take over the lands of the villagers and set up industries, malls, factories, etc. He executes evil plans to ruin the farmers. However, after drinking this “Gulabo” beer of his, he turns into this good hearted friend of the farmers. In fact, there is also a scene wherein Mandola organises a riot against himself.

A mysterious “Mao” organises the villagers and attempts to fight back against Mandola and return the land o their rightful owners. Matru (Imran Khan) is Mandola’s driver who has been assigned this highly important duty of keeping Mandola away from alcohol. However, he does an extremely poor job at that. Bijli (Anushka Sharma) is Mandola’s daughter who is getting married to Chaudhari Devi’s idiotic son Badal (Arya Babbar) even when she doesn’t love him. In between all this mess, are random scenes that are mentioned above, making the movie hilarious for some and rubbish for others. Imran Khan as has displayed a god deal of effort. Anushka Sharma stands out too, displaying the fun, effervescent Bijli. Pankaj Kapoor delivers his usual legendary performance. Vishal Bharadwaj’s direction is again something different and fresh. The music, like in every other Vishal Bharadwaj film is exceptional. Over all, go for this movie only if you dig the nonsensical humour.

Normal rating- 2 stars
My personal rating- 5 stars + 1 pink buffalo.
