Shanghai: Another Political Thriller

A hard hitting Indian political thriller; which is perfectly made. The screenplay and production down to the characterization, everything is impeccable! Shanghai is an offbeat movie, beyond entertatainment.

The story is set in an Indian city of Bharat Nagar, which is riddled with riots and politics. A socialite and a teacher, Ahmedi (Prosenjit Chatterjee), is protesting against the development plan of a MNC in coalition with the government; which will cause many poor people to lose their lands. He faces harsh reactions from some of the villagers who are under the spell of the government. He is ultimately run down by a truck in a conspicuous accident.

Thereafter, his adherent and former student, Shalini (Kalki Koechlin) struggles to prove that the gruesome murder was in fact, orchestrated. A video shooter and part time pornographer helps her in the struggle. He, unknowingly, holds a core evidence which later proves instrumental in solving the crime. The story very accurately describes the infamous political scenario in India.

Dibakar Banerjee’s direction is stupendous. Nikos Andritsakis' cinematography is very proficient and engaging. Vishal Shekar the music composer duo, have done a commendable work for the song "Bharat Mata Ki Jai". Although some viewers might find themselves bored in middle of the first half, the ending will make you forget all that. Every character is deep and is executed well by the actors. In terms of acting, this is one of Emraan Hashmi’s bests. Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin and Prosenjit Chaterjee have handled their role well.

Rating: 4/5
