New Stuff--The Comedy Outburst

Celebrating its second anniversary in Mumbai; The Comedy Store has great to offer and it’s the only such theatre and concept in Mumbai which only caters adult comedy. The Comedy Store has been a stage for world class comedians in London and Manchester and it’s a borrowed concept from the UK. A visit to it is a must if you have a funny bone and would like to experience or a fan of standup comedy. At first they make you feel comfortable and nice with their bar and diner, then they make you laugh with one-liners and punches .They would joke on all issues ranging from sex and politics to religion, college and Olympics! Now, as the jokes were all equally hilarious, we judged the comics on other parameters.

The show we went for was titled “New Stuff” and it promised to showcase new jokes and talent. We were served by seven comedians at the price of Rs.150. It all started with the host Neville Shah, he introduced himself as a half Parsi-half Gujju comedian. He made the people roll on the floor laughing and was the best as he was the host. He got off

the stage, interacted with the audience and humiliated them!. That always works doesn’t it?
One of the people who constantly got insulted by every comedian was one of our own colleagues and also the editor of all the posts you see on this blog  so I won’t be surprised if any line vanishes in “the interest of making the post better”
( Neville Shah, if you are reading this, he was the IT engineer whom you caught hold of ). Actually, he had already planned to sit on the first row and make himself the target! The comedians were not aware that the persons whom they were cracking jokes would be grading them! Here is a tip for you; If you care a lot of your image and do get offended from highly insulting lines on you/your partner, dare not sit in the front rows!

As it was New Stuff and we were their Lab-Rats to test their talents, some comedians were totally new and did suck. Karunesh Talwar, he was funny but sounded nervous, it looked like as it was his first experience on stage. His jokes were sarcastic with some hidden agitation behind it. It became worse with Keshav Naidu, he was literally reading the jokes out of his iPhone. We agree and know that an iPhone is something that you would like to flaunt but it should not accompany its masters to the stage.

There were some comics who were funny enough and took charge of the show. Vipul Goyal was introduced as a funny-IIT-graduate and we were ready for some Sheldon Cooper-like-bazinga blunders. But it went the other way, he was one the finest and made us laugh-out-loud with his humour in Hindi. Sahil Shah, though having a slight hint of Gujju accent, did an awesome job and stood out. He bought the Olympic Torch to India and made it simply amusing. Sapan Verma was the highlight and made everyone grab their stomachs laughing, he was confident than the others, his humour was original, funny and new.

The high end, classy adult humour, given by some talented group of comedians, will keep you thoroughly entertained throughout.

  1. Hey, nice write up. Just wanted to point out that all of the comedians you saw at the store that night have a fair share of experience. The idea behind 'New Stuff' was to give comedians a shot at trying brand new jokes. Developing material takes months. The jokes and bits have to go a through a series of writing, performing and re-writing until all the words in the set-up and punchline are fined tuned to deliver the best laughs. Some ideas work, some don't. But the only way to know if it will is to bring it in front of an audience. Since there is no guarantee that every bit will be funny, ticket prices are slashed. Which shouldn't necessarily mean that the comic himself sucks.

While some comics may have had their material on their phone or paper, it is not unusual to bring it with them on stage. It is a global practice when developing new material. Catch any of these comics in the Best in Stand-Up shows and you will see the difference in their act:)

Here is a link (http://www.businessinsider.com/how-does-chris-rock-create-such-brilliant-comedy-2012-7) that talks about Chris Rock develops new material. 'New Stuff' is based on a similar concept.

    Cheers
